Contingency

Mike Starr·Reviewed August 2026

A contingency is a condition that must be met for a real estate contract to become binding. Common contingencies include financing (the buyer must secure a mortgage), inspection (the property must pass inspection), and appraisal (the home must appraise at or above the purchase price). If a contingency is not met, the buyer can typically withdraw without penalty.
