Escrow

Mike Starr·Reviewed August 2026

An escrow account is a special account held by a mortgage lender or third party to collect and pay property taxes and homeowner's insurance on behalf of the borrower. Each monthly mortgage payment typically includes a portion that goes into escrow. Escrow also refers to the period between accepting an offer and closing.
