Negative Equity
Negative equity — often called being "underwater" or "upside down" — occurs when a homeowner owes more on the mortgage than the property is currently worth. It commonly happens when home values fall after purchase. Negative equity makes it difficult to sell or refinance without bringing cash to the closing table and can lead to default if financial hardship occurs.
