Prepayment Penalty

Mike Starr·Reviewed August 2026

A prepayment penalty is a fee charged by some lenders if a borrower pays off the loan early, either through extra payments, refinancing, or selling the home within a specified period. Most modern conforming and FHA loans do not have prepayment penalties, but some non-qualified mortgages and older loan products still include them.
