Rate Lock
A rate lock is a lender's guarantee that it will hold a specific interest rate for a set period (usually 30–60 days) while your loan is being processed. Locking protects you from rate increases during underwriting and closing. If rates drop significantly, some lenders offer a float-down option for an additional fee.
