Subordinate Lien
A subordinate lien is any mortgage or claim against a property that holds a lower priority than the first mortgage. In a foreclosure or sale, the first mortgage is paid first from proceeds, and subordinate lien holders receive payment only if funds remain. Home equity loans and HELOCs are common subordinate liens. Their higher risk means they typically carry higher interest rates.
