Origination Fee

Mike Starr·Reviewed August 2026

An origination fee is a charge by the lender for processing a mortgage loan application. It is typically 0.5–1% of the loan amount and compensates the lender for their work in evaluating and preparing the loan. Origination fees are included in the closing costs and appear on the Loan Estimate.
