Underwater Mortgage
An underwater mortgage (also called an upside-down mortgage) is one where the outstanding loan balance exceeds the current market value of the property. Homeowners with underwater mortgages cannot sell the property without bringing cash to closing and often cannot refinance under standard guidelines. Also called negative equity, it typically results from declining home values after purchase.
